We all remember it. Tiger Woods winning the 2019 Masters is up there with the greatest golfing moments of all-time.

Woods’ remarkable comeback from countless injuries to triumph around Augusta National for a fifth time sent shivers down the spine.

A 15th major for Woods very much signalled he was back in the game and his score of 13-under for the week saw him win out by just a single shot as he tapped in on the 18th to seal victory.

How many majors would Tiger Woods have won without his injuries?

Still, while everyone looking on was full of admiration for Woods, one man who struggled that year was a certain Rory McIlroy.

Indeed, speaking about Tiger’s win a year down the line, McIlroy admitted to having very mixed emotions.

Why Rory McIlroy wanted to leave quickly when Tiger Woods won the 2019 Masters

Of course, Rory McIlroy was never going to begrudge Woods winning the event.

Like all of us, McIlroy is a golf fan and seeing Woods do the business will have resonated with the Northern Irishman.

Still, after a poor week for him personally, McIlroy admitted he very much wanted to exit Augusta as quickly as possible.

“I wanted to get out of there,” McIlroy admitted. “It had been a disappointing week, I wanted to get home. I removed myself from it and thought: ‘Jesus, this is unbelievable.’ The longer Tiger is at the top of the game, the better it is for all of us.

“I messaged him. Anytime I win a tournament or have a chance, he is the first one to text me. All the time. So I always make sure if he is doing anything, that I’m right there.”

How Rory McIlroy performed at the 2019 Masters

Reading McIlroy’s comments here, you’d think he’d have missed the cut or been nowhere near proceedings.

However, such is McIlroy’s standard that he actually secured a top 25 finish for the week.

Do you think Rory McIlroy will win two or more majors before he retires?

It’s a whole different kettle of fish nowadays. He’s done way more than me. He’s won 29 times in America.‘Of the all-time greats, I’d put him fifth. Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack [Nicklaus] and Tiger [Woods]. Rory is right there. No discredit to Gene Sarazen, but that was a completely different era. I’ve hardly seen any footage of him, but achieving the grand slam puts you in a different category.

He obviously got off to a flyer with those first four majors. I remember I said then he might be really disappointed to only win ten majors or he will be ecstatic to win five.‘Tiger [Woods] and [Ben] Crenshaw both had big gaps [also 11 years] but only won one more. Rory is 35, he’s as fit as a fiddle, and you’ve got to believe he’s really shaken the monkey off his back.

I would’ve thought it’ll set him free and he might be the unique one to go on and win [multiple] more majors.

Nick Faldo’s comments after Rory McIlroy won the Masters

McIlroy finished in T21 for a score of five under for the week and while he was eight shots back of Woods’ winning score, it was by no means a complete disaster.

Still, this was in the midst of McIlroy desperately searching for his first Masters win and as we know, it wasn’t until this year that he finally got that monkey off his back.
