Reigning Players Champion Rory McIlroy’s participation in this year’s event is suddenly in serious doubt.

The Career Grand Slam winner recently withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational after experiencing lower back spasms, and while this was originally reported as a precaution ahead of The Players, it suddenly seems a little more serious.

McIlroy said to the Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis, “The back is being a bit more stubborn than we thought, so I’m staying at home today and tomorrow to continue treatment in South Florida with the hope to travel to Ponte Vedra on Wednesday at some point.”

This is clearly concerning, and McIlroy’s chances of retaining his Players crown have been significantly affected, but he can learn from what Fred Couples and Tiger Woods have done at this event in the past.

Tiger Woods and Fred Couples prove Rory McIlroy can win this year’s Players Championship

Winning The Players Championship after a late, injury-clouded arrival is a monumental task, primarily because TPC Sawgrass is famously unforgiving to anyone.

But while Rory is attempting something quite rare for this specific event, there is a legendary precedent set by Couples and Woods.

The most direct parallel to McIlroy’s current back injury is Couples in 1996. He famously struggled with chronic back issues throughout his career.

Who do you think will win The Players Championship this week?

Leading up to the 1996 Players, his back was so bad he could barely practice. He arrived late and played with virtually no preparation on the range. This is almost exactly the same as the situation McIlroy faces this year.

He shot a final-round 64, including an iconic eagle on the 16th, to win his second Players title. Like McIlroy, he relied on his course knowledge to navigate Sawgrass without any practise.

And in 2013, Woods followed a similar trajectory of managing an injury right up until the first tee.

The 15-time major winner was dealing with a neck and back strain that significantly limited his practise rounds. He spent more time in the physiotherapist’s trailer than on the putting green in the days leading up to Thursday.

He managed his way around the course with surgical precision, winning his second Players Championship.

Why Rory McIlroy faces a more difficult task than Tiger Woods and Fred Couples

McIlroy’s biggest challenge this week if he decides to tee off at TPC Sawgrass, might not be the injury, but the golf course. His lack of practise in the week could end up costing him dearly in a way that it didn’t with Woods or Couples.

Early reports indicate that this iconic venue will play very differently this year than in previous events. It’s already one of the most difficult tasks on the PGA Tour, but the setup is brutal in 2026.

Firstly, the rough is thicker than many reporters have ever seen at TPC Sawgrass. Any wayward tee shots are going to be severely punished.

Secondly, the greens. On Monday, it was reported that the putting surfaces were already beginning to brown. When members were asked if they had ever seen the greens like this so early in the week, they said they hadn’t. They are set to be lightning quick, unless we get some rain at some point during the event.

With that said, McIlroy might know this course like the back of his hand, but he doesn’t know it like this. That’s why his lack of midweek practise could rule him out of contention, with or without the injury.
