It is almost time for The Showdown; the much anticipated matchup between Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka and Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler.

There are a number of interesting subplots heading into The Showdown. Of course, the match pits two of the PGA Tour‘s best against two of LIV Golf‘s biggest names. Meanwhile, it is going to be fascinating to see how Rory McIlroy fares against Bryson DeChambeau after their duel at the US Open earlier this year.

But some will be largely intrigued to see how Scottie Scheffler gets on in this kind of environment. Unlike the other three players, the world number one has not featured in a version of The Match to date. From the outside, it certainly appears that he goes about his business on the golf course with minimal fuss.

And perhaps he has a small point to prove.

Why Scottie Scheffler is the most intriguing component in The Showdown

Of course, Scheffler won nine times worldwide in 2024, with the 28-year-old’s most recent triumph coming with his six-shot victory at the Hero World Challenge. It has been asked however, whether there is a small asterisk against Scheffler’s year due to the likes of DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka not plying their trade on the PGA Tour any longer.

So there is an opportunity for Scheffler to silence any doubters at Shadow Creek. What will be interesting to see is how often Scheffler is first to hit into greens, with DeChambeau and McIlroy, in particular, likely to outdrive the two-time Masters champion more often than not.

Scheffler is better known for throwing darts with his irons. He is first for strokes gained tee to green, and for his approach play on the PGA Tour in 2024. Meanwhile, he is a lowly second for strokes gained off the tee.

So how far does Scheffler actually hit each club on average? Thankfully, Bunkered provided a detailed breakdown earlier this year…

How Scheffler’s driving compares with McIlroy, DeChambeau and Koepka

Scheffler ended up averaging 303.8 yards off the tee during the 2024 season, but that was only enough for 64th place on the PGA Tour. McIlroy meanwhile, was second, having averaged a fraction over 320 yards throughout the year.

It will not surprise many to know that DeChambeau led the way for driving distance on LIV in 2024 as he averaged 323.5 yards. Koepka was down in 13th, having averaged 312.6 yards.

That may appear to put Scheffler at something of a disadvantage. However, psychologically, it could be a game-changer having the world number one hitting into greens first given just how good he is with his irons.
