He’s the two-time PGA Tour winner who shot the first 58 in professional golf history and even missed a putt for 57 on the last hole

There have been plenty of golfers over the years who have gone round in 59 and 60 but to go round in 58 is a completely different story.

Shooting a 58 requires the most brilliant of rounds no matter what level of golf you’re playing at. With most courses being around a par 70-72 on the PGA Tour, it means a player is effectively going round at -12 or better.

However, it can be done. And it has been done.

In 2016 we saw Jim Furyk become the first man in PGA Tour history to shoot a 58 on that specific tour.

But while Furyk’s achievement is quite something, he wasn’t the first to do it and set the precedent.

Indeed, that honour belongs to 52-year-old American golfer, Jason Bohn.

How Jason Bohn became the first man to shoot 58 in a professional golf event

Jason Bohn is a two-time PGA Tour winner but his greatest achievement came prior to those two wins back in 2001.

Competing on the Canadian Tour at the Bayer Championship, Bohn became the first player in history to hit the 58 mark in a professionally sanctioned event.

In the final round, Bohn started like a house on fire as he tore up the first seven holes by going birdie, birdie, birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie, eagle. He quickly came back down to earth with a bogey on the 8th but Bohn soon got back on the horse, making birdie on nine to go out in just 26.

Bohn then played the back nine in just 32 strokes, making a further four birdies to make it ten birdies, two eagles, five pars and a bogey for his final round.

Remarkably, Bohn actually missed a putt from inside 20 feet on the final hole to shoot a 57 as his ball trickled by the hole.

Luckily for Bohn, he’d done enough and ended up winning the tournament by two strokes.

All the golfers to shoot 58 in professional golf tournaments

Shooting a 58 is a stunning achievement really. To go round a golf course in such a number requires the skill and mental strength that only few have.

However, Jason Bohn and the aforementioned Jim Furyk are not the only players to manage the feat.

In fact, another five golfers – including Bryson DeChambeau – have also hit the magic number.

DeChambeau is the last player to do it, carding his 58 at the LIV Greenbrier event in 2023. But with only seven players doing it in the last 25 years across all tours, it shows just how rare it is.

With so much talent in the game now, we might well see it again some day. But right now, those seven players hold a special place in history.
