Those of us who play golf regularly understand just how difficult the game is to master.

We watch the PGA Tour professionals on television every week and marvel at their brilliance but more so, the way in which they make the game look so easy.

There are certain kinds of golfers who get off to hot starts and are not afraid to keep firing at pins and continue to go lower and lower.

The best score recorded on the PGA Tour is a 58, shot by Jim Furyk at the Travelers Championship back in 2016.

There have been a whole host of 59s shot as well, but one score carded 13 years ago blew all of them out of the water.

It was a sensational round of golf which proved to be truly unbelievable to witness by those who were there.

Rhein Gibson shot a world record 55 before firing his caddie six years later

Back in 2012, Rhein Gibson set out for a round of golf at River Oaks Golf Club in Edmond, Oklahoma, on a Saturday morning.

And what lay in wait for him was a history-making four hours.

Gibson carded an unbelievable 12 birdies, two eagles and just four pars for a round of 16-under par 55.

The 39-year-old Australian’s score set a new Guinness World Record – one which still stands today.

Ryan Munson, a financial adviser who plays off scratch, was in attendance that day, and he could not believe what he was witnessing.

Fox told Amateur Golf, “It was like he was throwing a perfect game, and we were just trying to stay out of his way. When Gibson made his 13-foot right-to-left slider for birdie to go 10 under at No. 18 (his ninth), all silence went out the window. We whooped, we high-fived and we did our ‘bro hugs’. It’s the most phenomenal thing we’d ever seen.”

Gibson has gone on to play 61 PGA Tour events and 218 Korn Ferry tournaments throughout his career.

However, aside from his round of 55 in 2012, the most notable incident he has been involved in was a big falling out with his caddie seven years ago.

Back in 2018, Gibson was playing in the Bahamas Great Abaco Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour and was just one shot off the lead when disaster struck.

The 39-year-old ended up firing his caddie, Brandon Davis, mid-round after a big misunderstanding.

The Australian hooked his drive into the rocks on one hole.

A tour official found Gibson’s ball lodged under two rocks and Davis claims he said to Gibson, ‘we’ve got nothing’, to which the world record holder responded, ‘forget it’.

Davis picked Gibson’s ball up, apparently without Gibson’s consent. That meant the Australian was handed a one-stroke penalty and he dropped from a tie for second into third, costing him $16,000.

The 39-year-old hurled his putter cover at Davis in anger, and subsequently fired him.

However, Gibson did apologize after the incident.

He said: “Unfortunately my caddie was involved with a ruling on the 18th that caused me to fall from T-2 to third. My actions were less than professional and I apologize to my caddie and those that took offence to my behaviors.“

At least he owned his actions but at the same time, it’s hard not to feel sorry for Gibson.

$16,000 for a Korn Ferry Tour player is a serious amount of money and losing out on it must have hurt him badly.
