With the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black swiftly approaching, anticipation is building amongst golf fans that this year’s edition of the competition could be the most exciting one yet.
The 45th edition of the Ryder Cup will be fiercely contested and Keegan Bradley is already rallying his troops.
Bradley is already motivating his US Ryder Cup team by playing them old clips of players such as Rory McIlroy making overly confident predictions about the outcome at Bethpage Black.
Team USA is awash with big-name PGA Tour players including the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele and LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau.
While the quality of golf at Bethpage may be better than we have ever witnessed during a Ryder Cup before, the bar has been set really high if this year’s competition is to match previous editions in terms of animosity.

There is one man in particular who was hugely successful in the Ryder Cup and he knows about the hostile atmosphere of the competition throughout the years all too well.
However, he never managed to win on the PGA Tour.
Colin Montgomerie played in eight Ryder Cup teams but never won on the PGA Tour
European legend Colin Montgomerie is synonymous with the Ryder Cup.
He is tied fifth on the all-time points list behind only Sergio Garcia, Nick Faldo, Lee Westwood and Bernhard Langer.
The Scot played on eight Ryder Cup teams and he captained Europe to the trophy in 2010 at Celtic Manor.
Montgomerie is unbeaten in eight singles matches at the Ryder Cup, with six wins and two halves to his name.
In addition to that, he is the only player in the history of the competition to have holed the winning putt on two separate occasions – 1997 and 2004.

The 62-year-old was a completely different animal when it came to Ryder Cup week, certainly from the man who never managed to win on American soil.
Montgomerie had five second-place finishes in the major championships, with three of those coming at the US Open, one at the PGA Championship and one at The Open Championship.
He quite obviously had a mental block when playing on the PGA Tour and specifically in America, but that did not translate to his performances for Europe in the Ryder Cup.
Colin Montgomerie’s Ryder Cup and PGA Tour records simply don’t add up
Montgomerie’s Ryder Cup and PGA Tour records could not make for more different reading.
| Results | Montgomerie’s totals |
| Matches played | 36 |
| Wins | 20 |
| Losses | 9 |
| Halves | 7 |
| Points total | 23.5 |
That record is truly remarkable.
However, his performances on the PGA Tour were not quite as impressive.
| Results | Montgomerie’s totals |
| Events played | 142 |
| Wins | 0 |
| Top-5s | 13 |
| Top-10s | 24 |
| Cuts made | 102 |
Montgomerie clearly has trouble dealing with the pressure and getting over the line when playing stroke-play for himself.
But under more severe pressure at the Ryder Cup, and when playing for his teammates as well as himself, the now 62-year-old thrived.
That just doesn’t add up, does it? Sure, Montgomerie had plenty of close calls in major championships throughout his career, but the fact that he never won on the PGA Tour is a real anomaly.
Especially when considering the fact that he was triumphant 31 times on the European Tour (now known as the DP World Tour).
Montgomerie’s failure to win a single event in America is one of life’s mysteries and aside from the harsh treatment he received from American fans at times, there wasn’t an obvious reason why he struggled across the other side of The Atlantic.
