It is always a big boost to the game when Tiger Woods is able to tee it up in an event – even now in the twilight of his incredible career.

Tiger Woods remains one of the biggest attractions in the game of golf. Woods continues to move the needle when it comes to television ratings.

Do you think Tiger Woods can win another PGA Tour event?

And it is probably fair to say that every appearance in a tournament now has added significance, with Woods’ body seemingly refusing to give him a break.

But perhaps the likelihood of Woods being able to play more again is about to increase imminently.

What Geoff Ogilvy expects Tiger Woods to do as his 50th birthday approaches

Of course, the 15-time major champion is currently sidelined due to injuries to his Achilles and his back. Crucially, Woods has not publicly revealed any timeframe for his return.

But there is an important event in Woods’ life approaching, as he prepares to turn 50 in December. Obviously, that means that he will be eligible to play on PGA Tour Champions.

It would be amazing for the game if Woods was able to play a little more often. But playing on the senior tour may be bad news for some.

Speaking to Golfweek in 2023, Geoff Ogilvy suggested that the PGA Tour will actually suffer if Woods tees it up on another circuit.

“I’ve still got a few years [four to be exact] but I’m keen to play [on the senior tour]. I think the Champions Tour is on the verge of a resurgence. I fully expect Tiger to play,” he said.

“Taking a cart changes everything for him. Interest both from fans and sponsors is going to be through the roof. I think there’s a good chance that Champions Tour ratings can top the PGA Tour when he decides to play. And what else is he going to?”

PGA Tour Champions may be what Tiger Woods needs to stand any chance of a record 83rd victory

The worry is that Woods has had a number of further issues since Ogilvy’s comments. His body has dealt with even more punishment. And it is not yet clear just how determined he is to play again.

But it would undoubtedly be a game-changer for PGA Tour Champions if he was able to play in a handful of events each year. That would also help him prepare for the majors.

What golfers have said about Tiger Woods joining the PGA Tour Champions

“It would be a thrill to see Tiger come out and play the Champions Tour, and I’m convinced he will play several. Depends how many. I’m going to gradually get older and older here, and I may not be at the very top of my game when he comes out, but he always moves the needle. He’s a very exciting personality to watch, and it would be fantastic for Tiger and for our tour to be competing out there, and I think all the players would welcome him.”

Bernhard Langer

“I’ve said, please come play. And I think it can only be beneficial to him. He will get himself in golf shape. You can ride a cart without any shame and if there was one guy that should be able to drive a cart, it’s him… and he can get his a** back in shape.”

Ernie Els

“I think it would be super for the [PGA Tour Champions] if Tiger is able to play. Great for sponsors, tv, etc. And we will all begin our rounds looking for his name on the board. Where is he? Do we have a chance? Hopefully we do, but maybe not.”

Colin Montgomerie

The 2024 season saw Woods play in the four majors. Unfortunately, each event took so much out of him that he was not able to play more in between. With that, he was unable to build up any stamina or momentum.

If he can play more tournaments which put less of a strain on his body, then he can get in more of the practice that will increase his chances of being competitive on the biggest stages.

Clearly, it is going to take something herculean for Woods to win another event on the PGA Tour and set the new record for the most victories.

But one thing you can never do in the game of golf is rule Tiger Woods out.
