While Tiger Woods is obviously one of the greatest players of all-time, it still says a lot that Collin Morikawa felt that he became a better iron player every time he teed it up with the 15-time major champion.

Of course, Collin Morikawa has been one of the most impressive iron players on the PGA Tour for several years now. He has won two major titles, and certainly seemed to rediscover something like his better form towards the end of the 2024 season.

In 2021, Morikawa was first on tour for strokes gained approaching the green. That was the year that he won The Open Championship, securing his second major in only his eighth start in the sport’s four biggest events.

How Tiger Woods inspired Collin Morikawa’s iron game

So it was fair to ask whether there is anyone at all whose iron game Morikawa admires. And speaking to Golf.com three years ago, the current world number four explained why he is in awe of Tiger Woods‘ game.

“I love Tiger. Every time I play with him, I think he makes me a better iron player, because he hits every shot that you need,” he said.

“If the pin’s on the left, he’s hitting a draw. If the pin’s on the right, he’s hitting a fade. I think that’s the coolest thing because not a lot of guys out there have that capability to work their shots like that.”

Woods could be a threat from absolutely anywhere on the course

It was part of Woods’ charm that he seemed to be capable of hitting any shot at any particular time. You never felt that he was out of the hole just because he hit a wayward drive which left him in danger.

In fact, some of the greatest shots Woods hit came when he seemed to be in a spot of bother – perhaps most notably at the 2000 Canadian Open when he produced a moment of audacious brilliance from the bunker as he went on to secure his ninth win of the season.

It was because of Woods’ ability to attack the flag from almost anywhere which captured the imagination. So it is no surprise that Morikawa was so inspired.
