The US Open has been a really disappointing one for Collin Morikawa.

Morikawa actually got his week off to an encouraging start at Oakmont, with a solid opening round of 70 on day one of the US Open.

However, things got worse for him as the week went on at Oakmont, as he backed up his opening round of even-par with back-to-back 74s.

Morikawa isn’t a fan of the lack of trees at the US Open venue this year, and many other players are on the same page in that regard.

Before the tournament began, Scottie Scheffler and Jack Nicklaus criticised the removal of so many trees at Oakmont.

However, there are so many good things about Oakmont in general – the incredibly undulating greens being one of them.

However, Morikawa has struggled badly on them this week.

Collin Morikawa has a big problem at the US Open

Morikawa has a serious issue.

And the problem he has needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency.

The 28-year-old will be a non-factor at the US Open this year, and the reason for that is clear as day.

Morikawa has putted horrendously this week. That may sound harsh, but it’s the reality of the matter.

The six-time PGA Tour winner took 36 putts during his third round at Oakmont on Saturday – unheard of really for a tour pro.

He has lost strokes on the field in every single round on the greens at Oakmont, and he ranks dead last in total for strokes gained putting.

In fact, Morikawa has lost a total of seven strokes to the field on the greens during the first three rounds at the US Open.

If he had putted even to a decent standard and been at 0 strokes gained for the tournament on the greens, rather than minus seven, he would actually be in with a chance of winning the golf tournament.

And the thought of that must really rankle with the Californian.

Collin Morikawa’s PGA Tour putting stats since 2020

The two-time major champion is clearly going through difficult times right now with the flat-stick.

Here is how he ranks on the PGA Tour in the strokes gained putting category over the past six seasons.

YearPGA Tour rank

202473rd
2023114th
2022131st
2021178th
2020128th

Interestingly, the 28-year-old has actually made marginal gains in the putting department over the past two years.

However, when it matters, he simply isn’t consistent enough on the greens.

The best putting day Morikawa has ever had was during the final round of the Open Championship in 2021.

In fact, he putted great all week at Royal St Georges.

And if Morikawa is to discover his best stuff, he needs to at least putt to an average standard, rather than what we saw him serve up at the US Open on Saturday.
