Chris Como has become one of the most recognisable coaches in the game, having worked with the likes of Bryson DeChambeau, Xander Schauffele and Tiger Woods.

Chris Como’s stock certainly rose in 2024 with Xander Schauffele winning two major titles. But before that, he had gained recognition for his stints with Tiger Woods and Bryson DeChambeau.

Como was Woods’ coach between 2014 and 2017, while he was working with DeChambeau during the time in which the 31-year-old transformed his body.

DeChambeau began the huge changes to his physique in late 2019, and it reaped almost immediate rewards as he won the US Open the following year for his first major title.

In many ways, DeChambeau played such a key role in shaping the current game. His approach inspired a number of players – including Rory McIlroy – to try and add significant speed to their swings. And it has become incredibly difficult for the shorter hitters to now win on the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.

It was a gamble for DeChambeau to make those changes. He was already knocking on the door of the world’s best when he started to transform his body. Justin Thomas admitted he did not expect DeChambeau’s plan to work.

But the Crushers captain always had confidence in what he was trying to do. And speaking to Subpar in 2020, Como outlined the similarities between DeChambeau and Woods.

“Tiger is known for his work ethic. But when I was working with him, he just didn’t have the capacity to hit a ton of balls, so it was very strategic in how much time he could spend hitting balls, just because of the back and all that. Bryson has the work ethic I would imagine Tiger had in his prime, so there’s that sort of comparison,” he said.

“Then that overall curiosity, they’re both very curious people, they both love trying to understand the game, their own swing, just really going deep into thought into what makes this all work. Both very smart and curious. And then going back to the other thing, both willing to take risks. They had this vision, this goal in mind, and they’re willing to say okay, I’m going to take the risk to achieve that, because at the end of the day there’s a cost of doing nothing. How many people have not ever tried to get better and lost their tour card?”

What Tiger Woods made of Bryson DeChambeau’s changes back in 2020

Woods was partnered with DeChambeau at the 2018 Ryder Cup, while they were also teammates at the Presidents Cup the following year – with Woods also captaining the team at Royal Melbourne.

And ahead of the 2020 Masters, Woods was asked about the work DeChambeau had done away from the course. It is safe to say that the 15-time champion was hugely impressed.

“What Bryson has done has been absolutely incredible,” he said, as reported by BBC Sport.

“We have all been amazed at what he’s been able to do in such a short span of time.”

DeChambeau appears to have found a way to make those changes much more sustainable in the years since. And it has reaped real rewards on the course.

A second major title came in 2024, while he has finished inside the top six at five of the last six major championships. It would be no surprise if major number three was just around the corner.
