Bryson DeChambeau has unquestionably developed into one of the best players in the world, with the American winning one major and finishing in the top 10 in two others in 2024.
It has been fascinating watching Bryson DeChambeau over the years. He is one of the most unique characters the game of golf has seen.
Of course, he quickly attracted attention for using a set of irons with shafts all the same length. Meanwhile, his swing is like nothing else you will see on the PGA Tour or LIV Golf. And DeChambeau has definitely not been afraid to push boundaries, particularly in his quest to add more speed to his game.
But he has been vindicated for making all of those changes.

DeChambeau has become one of the biggest superstars in the game. He has won the US Open on two occasions, while he produced the lowest round in LIV history at Greenbrier in 2023 as he posted a 58 to win that day.
In some ways, it must be a burden to have such a detailed idea about every part of your game. But it seems that DeChambeau has been encouraged to continue on that path.
Speaking about his nickname, the Scientist, in an interview with 5 Clubs in 2022, DeChambeau explained what both Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods had told him about reaching the top.
“I will say this, Phil gave me a great statement one time, and Tiger’s told me this too – you’ve got to be really smart in the game or you’ve got to be really dumb and you just don’t know anything and you just go play and you have fun. Literally, those are the two things. If you’re stuck in the middle, it’s going to be tough to be one of the best,” he said.
“Sometimes it’s the not as easy route, and vice-versa. The way Dustin Johnson plays, and I’m not saying he’s dumb at all, he’s actually really smart. And the thing is he plays that card really well, but he knows a lot about the golf swing, so it’s kind of a little sneaky smart ploy that he doesn’t really showcase too much.
“Yeah, you’ve either got to not know too much or you’ve got to know a lot. That’s what Phil does, that’s what Vijay’s done. Fred Couples was on the other side. Tiger knew a lot, from the experiences and the times I’ve been with him. And the same thing with me.”
What Phil Mickelson said about DeChambeau during the 2024 Masters
It is impossible not to be impressed by DeChambeau. While some of his actions have frustrated fans in the past, he deserves enormous credit for the approach he has taken to the game.
And Mickelson was indeed full of praise for the US Open champion when speaking about him during the 2024 Masters.
“He’s one of the smartest people I know and he’s one of the most talented players I know and probably one of the hardest working. He has found a way to play golf that’s different and unique from anybody I’ve ever seen play it,” he said.
“He believes and knows that it gives him opportunities and advantages, and he’s got the commitment and the self-assurance to not care what anybody else says but to go down this path that he knows is right for him. I think a lot of him and have a lot of respect for him.”
DeChambeau has some way to go before he is put alongside some of the greatest to have ever played the game. But he is certainly going to be remembered as one of the most intriguing characters the sport has seen.
