Why LIV should abandon the 2026 season and focus on team events for the rest of the year

The coming weeks may tell us a lot about what the future holds for LIV Golf, with the league’s next event not taking place until after The Open Championship.

LIV Golf‘s future remains uncertain. The league is still working to source funding beyond this season when the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia plans to walk away.

The rumour mill has been in overdrive since The Masters. What did not help was the decision to postpone June’s event in New Orleans.

Front Office Sports reported this week that the PIF may not wait until the end of the season to pull the plug on funding the league.

There is an argument that those behind the scenes at LIV should call time on the 2026 campaign.

At the very least, they should declare Jon Rahm the champion for this year and announce a big change to their remaining events.

The change LIV Golf should make to their remaining events in 2026

LIV is going to change dramatically after this year, whatever happens. No one is going to be prepared to back the league in the way the PIF have done. So there is an opportunity to turn their attention towards the future.

According to Flushing It, the pitch LIV are making to investors involves the league season including a number of team majors and signature events.

The big problem is that LIV’s Team Championship is often as dull as the rest of their events. It is far from the showpiece that the league needs it to be if they are hoping to prove that team golf is the future.

LIV currently has four more events in the diary at a time when the league is in the shop window. Those remaining tournaments should focus solely on the teams.

Team events may help LIV Golf in its push to secure new investment

They are all set to come after major championship season has concluded. So it would not exactly scupper the preparation of their top players.

Meanwhile, it would give LIV an opportunity to find exactly the right formula for their team events that allows them to potentially hit the ground running in 2027.

Of course, there will be some ridicule, particularly if LIV changes the format from tournament to tournament.

However, the most important thing is that LIV finds the format that is going to convince investors to come on board – and then thrive from next year.

There seems to be little point continuing to play the events as they currently are when LIV is likely to look so different next year anyway.
